Freeman for Skye and Lochalsh - honour for Dame Ellen

The Highland Council has unanimously agreed to recognise Ellen’s achievements by giving her the freedom of the area.  A ceremony will be held in the area later this year.

Ellen’s great grandfather was brought up at Luib and left Skye in the 1880s to settle in Derbyshire where the family have remained since.  Ellen is currently building a home on the island, where she spends as much of her free time as possible.

She will join Dr Sorley MacLean, Dr John Ball and Mr David Noble as freemen of the area.

Councillor Drew Millar, Ceannaire of the Council’s Skye and Lochalsh Area Committee, said:  “In becoming the fastest person to sail solo non-stop around the world, Ellen registered the most significant of a number of firsts, records and achievements in her sailing career.  In addition to her national and international profile as a sailor, she is linked to the London Olympics Project and to a charity which offers sailing tuition to children with cancer and leukaemia.

“I met her in June when she confirmed she would be greatly honoured to become a Freeman of Skye and Lochalsh.  She also indicated her willingness to share her experience with young people who are interested in sports in general, and sailing in particular.  She is also keen to stress the tremendous quality and range of opportunities that are offered to sportsmen on the waters around Skye and Lochalsh.”
