Nominations sought for new Community Awards

The contribution of local people’s time, effort and energy to improve the lives of others and emerging new talent is to be officially recognized. Elected members from the Eilean a’ Cheò ward are inviting people living on the islands of Skye and Raasay to nominate representatives from their local community for a Civic Recognition Award.

Run by The Highland Council, these new awards will recognize outstanding ability or significant contribution by a group or individual in a number of different categories including the Environment, Community, Enterprise, Young People and awards for both sporting and artistic or musical achievement.

Speaking on behalf of the Ward Members, Councillor John Laing said:  “These new Awards are a chance for us to say a big “thank you” to the people that are the backbone of our communities.  These ambassadors are busy working quietly behind the scenes and play a very valuable role. I would like to encourage as many people as possible to put forward names of people they think deserve recognition for the contribution they make.  We welcome entries for people of all ages and from all walks of life.”

To qualify nominees must be resident on the Isle of Skye and Raasay or be able to demonstrate their actions and activities have resulted in a significant benefit to the local community.  The closing date for entries is Thursday 1 April.

Successful award winners will be announced during an awards ceremony to be held at the Ward Forum Meeting in May.
