Completion of school pitch delayed due to poor growth

Pupils at Portree High School will have to wait longer to play sports on a new grass pitch at their school.

The original turf, laid last year, has suffered as a result of exceptional wet weather and the contractors decided that it was unlikely to fully recover. This has happened despite extensive efforts by Morrison Construction to encourage growth and the fact that the pitch construction includes a drainage system, installed in accordance with Sportscotland guidelines.

Work to rectify the problem is now underway and includes a surface treatment and laying new turf.

Bill Fernie, Chairman of The Highland Council’s Education, Culture and Sport Committee said: “While this is a regrettable position the Council is satisfied that all involved have sought to achieve delivery on the pitch.”

Catherine MacDonald, Head Teacher at Portree High School said: “We will continue to use the new synthetic pitch and the King George V playing fields until the new grass pitch is handed over. We offer a wide range of sporting activities here in Portree High School. While we are disappointed, we know it will be worth waiting for.”

A spokesperson for Morrison Construction said: “Despite best efforts the new pitch is currently unplayable.  While we are disappointed, we are confident the short term disruption will be more than countered by the long term benefits the playing field will bring.”

The pitch availability date will be agreed between the Council and the contractor when the turf laying operation has been completed. The work is being done at no cost to the Council.
