Nursery youngsters Get Set Go for 2012

150 pre-school children in the Nairn area are being encouraged to “Get Set Go” as part of the Nairn Primary Schools Health Week (24 – 28 May).

While older pupils take part in various health-related activities in their respective schools the nursery youngsters will gather at The Maggot on Friday 28 May (10am to 12 noon) to participate in an Active Schools Annual Nursery Olympics.

Sponsored by local business East to West financial services all 4 year olds from cluster nurseries will be supported through their paces by Nairn Academy Sports Leaders who also lead the way in Highland on The Young Ambassador for Sport Programme.

Created as a direct response to the promise that London would use the power of the Olympic and Paralympic Games to inspire millions of young people to choose sport - the Young Ambassador Programme has been awarded the London 2012 Inspire Mark for education. The Young Ambassador Programme also forms an important part of the PE and sport strand of Get Set, the official London 2012 education programme.

Central to the Young Ambassador Programme is the principle of young people driving opportunity, engagement and change for other young people and as a result the Nairnshire Nursery event is at the top of the Nairn agenda.

The Nairn Young Ambassadors who are already considered as sporting role models to young people in their communities were not only selected due to their sporting talent but more importantly their outstanding commitment and ability as young leaders and volunteers. This role not only involves increasing participation in school sport and PE and promoting active and healthy lifestyles but also spreading the word of the Olympic and Paralympic values of Respect, Friendship, Personal excellence, Courage, Determination, Inspiration and Equality.  The Nursery event which has a main focus of participation encourages the little ones to take part in fun filled activities with every competitor receiving a medal.

Following election, the Gold Young Ambassadors from every Local Authority are expected to undertake the role for at least two years. After their first year in the role they have the additional responsibility of becoming a mentor for the new Young Ambassadors in their School.  By 2012 it is hoped to have at least 5,000 Young Ambassadors across the UK. Many of the Sports Leaders involved in this project are also part of the Dreams and Teams group who are travelling to Malawi in June where promoting the values of the 2012 Games is included in the programme.
