Environmental Awareness Events

Next Saturday (5 June) is World Environment Day and the Council will be hosting two events next week for staff to raise awareness and give advice and helpful tips on ways to cut waste and live a greener lifestyle.

The Sutherland event will have representatives from the Energy Savings Trust, Highland Real Nappy Project, Homeaid Caithness & Sutherland, The Cooperative, Waste Aware Highland, The Woodland Trust and GREAN who will be giving demonstrations and advice including tip on how to save £430 a year by avoiding food waste.  Staff will also be offered the chance to have a go on an eco-driving simulator and a local food producer will have a stall selling fruits, vegetables and preserves.

The Inverness event will also include cookery demonstrations showing how left-overs in the fridge can be turned into tasty meals and snacks.  Real Food from Inverness High School will be selling vegetables, bread and jams and Countryside Rangers will be demonstrating how to build a biodiversity garden to attract wildlife.

Councillor John Laing, Chairman of TEC services said:  “These events show our commitment to promote to staff practical tips and sound advice on making recycling and reducing our waste something everyone can easily do.  Sometimes it is the small changes that can have the biggest impact.  I am particularly pleased that both New Start Highland and Homeaid will be promoting their services as all donating unwanted items get passed on to help others in the community.”
