Hostel Entitlement at Portree High School

The Highland Council’s Education Culture and Sport Committee has agreed that hostel entitlement at Portree High School be removed from pupils from Kyleakin, Drumfearn, Isle Ornsay, Camus Cross, Teangue, Sasaig, and Ferindonald from July 2007.

All students with a hostel place at the start of the new school session will be entitled to remain at the hostel in Portree for the full duration of their education.

Committee Chairman Councillor Andy Anderson moved a motion proposing the change in entitlement because road improvements had reduced travel times to Portree and a number of parents in the area already opted for their children to use school transport to Portree High rather than stay in the hostel.

Councillor Bill Fulton was supported by Councillors Hamish Fraser and John Laing in moving an amendment for pupils from these areas to continue having the option of staying in the hostel accommodation.

The Chairman’s motion to remove the entitlement was successful by 10 votes to 9.
