Strome Ferry update – extended closure needed

The A890 Strome Ferry Bypass remains closed due to the danger of further rockfall and is not now expected to reopen until 31 December.

Consulting Engineers have assessed the site and have identified a large quantity of dangerously unstable rock.

Contractors have been working for the past 2 days to remove rock in imminent danger of collapse but will be unable to complete the work before Christmas.  This is highly skilled work which can only be undertaken by specialist contractors.

Whilst the contractors have been deliberately removing rock in a controlled manner, natural falls have continued to occur, making the work extremely dangerous.

The Council regrets the inconvenience to the public but safety is the first consideration.

The police have been informed of the continued road closure.
