Willow bower gets make over at Bower Primary School

Despite the strong winds and cold temperatures last Sunday (20 February 2010), members of the Caithness Countryside Volunteers met to undertake major maintenance work on a willow bower at Bower primary school.

Over the years, the willow bower had become over grown and difficult for the children to work with. The volunteers cut back much of the mature growth and reshaped the younger stems, bunching and moulding them into loops and curves.

Event organiser, Marina Swanson, Highland Council’s Countryside Ranger said: “The willow bower was originally planted over then years ago and looked like an out of control forest when we first arrived.  We were pleased with the final product and hope the children will enjoy the structure. Thank you to all our volunteers for turning out on the day and making such a great job.”

The Caithness Countryside Volunteers is organised through The Highland Council’s Planning and Development Countryside Rangers and is always looking for new members.
