Big Cheers For Volunteers

A special event to celebrate and recognise the work of volunteers in promoting physical activity in the Inverness Area will take place at Inverness Sports Centre on Wednesday 23 August.

Over one hundred volunteers who play an important role in teaching a wide variety of sports and leisure activities to hundreds of young school pupils living in the area are expected to attend.

Volunteering Highland, the local Volunteer Centre is working alongside The Highland Council’s Active School Co-ordinators to ensure that volunteering with Active Schools is a success for everybody involved.

The evening will give volunteers the chance to swap sides and take part in an activity rather than delivering it. The evening will begin with an hour long session in the games hall giving the volunteers a chance to meet each other and take part in some fun activities including Foot Works by the ICT Community team and Capoeira dance by Fraser MacDonald. This will be followed by a celebration cake, kindly donated by Asher’s bakery, and a word of thanks.

Alan Clark, The Highland Council’s Active School Project Manager will officially thank everyone for their commitment and hard work. He said: “This event is the ideal opportunity for us to sincerely thank everyone involved with sports volunteering.  So many people freely give their time, skills and energy to improving the lives of young people.   Without the huge contribution they make, many young people would not have the chance to participate in regular physical activity.”

Dagmar Borrowman, Volunteering Highlands Regional Development Officer for Volunteering in Sport said: “Volunteering is a two way process in which volunteer and the organisation both gain something. The Active Schools project in Highland appreciates the importance that volunteers play, if you do not look after your volunteers they will leave.”

The five Inverness Active Schools Coordinators Peta Law, Sharon Asher, Suzanne Hamilton, Kirsten Grant and Carolyn Ward are all working with volunteers to run activities in Inverness’s schools.

Anyone interested to join the Active Schools volunteer team can register by contacting Volunteering Highland 01463-711393.
