Award winning author on Skye

Award winning writer and storyteller Lari Don is returning to her Skye roots. Lari, whose mother was brought up in Portree, when her father, Iain Murray, was the headmaster in the town, will be visiting the island on Friday 6 August.

Now living in Leith, Lari is planning to hold two separate sessions at Portree Community Library during which she will read extracts from her books and chat with local youngsters about her writing career.

From 10:30am -  11:15am, 3-7 year olds are invited along to listen as Lari reads from her picture books ”The Big Bottom Hunt” and “How to Make a Heron Happy”.

Then later, between 11.45am -12.30pm,  the author will be introducing youngsters, aged 8-12 years to “Storm Singing”, the third book in her award-winning “First Aid for Fairies” adventure series.  Similar sessions, but on Wednesday 3 August, will be held at Broadford Library.  The 3-7 year olds between 11.00am-11.45am and 8-12’s from 12.15pm-1.00pm.

The second book, “Wolf Notes” was set partly in Skye, and “Storm Singing” has a local connection too – with some of the magical characters (the mysterious Blue Men) coming from the Minch.  Lari will read from “Storm Singing” and talk about how the Scottish landscape and legends inspire her writing.

She said: “I read from one of my earlier novels, Wolf Notes, in Skye a couple of summers ago, and I’m really looking forward to coming back with the next adventure.  Helen and her fabled beast friends went a bit further north for this adventure, to the cliffs and caves of Sutherland, but one of their rivals swam up from the Minch, so I wonder if he might pop into the libraries in Broadford or Portree to ask me why I keep putting my characters in so much danger!

“I’m always inspired by the local legends of the areas where I set my novels, but the stories of Skye which I’ve known all my life, because my mother is from Portree, are part of magical history and background of everything that I write, so it’s always wonderful to come back here and be inspired all over again!”

The sessions with Lari are free of charge and further information is available from both libraries.
