Lochaber interschool sports

Sixteen primary schools, from as far away as Mallaig and Lochaline, competed at this year's Lochaber Interschool swimming gala and athletics championships on Tuesday 21 June.

The morning events, held in the Lochaber Leisure Centre swimming pool saw pupils competing in individual events and a four-swimmer relay. The afternoon kicked off from Claggan Park with a hill run, followed by heats on the track and field events. Excitement mounted as the finals began and medals decided, with the day culminating in the 4 x 100m relay final.

As well as individual achievement, the competition is set so that all finalists win points which count towards the interschool competition.  This is split into small, medium and large schools, depending on school roll.

The results for the swimming gala were: in the large schools category – Banavie Primary; medium schools category - Spean Bridge Primary; and small schools category - Lochaline Primary.

Winning schools for the athletics championships were: in the large schools category -Caol Primary; medium schools category - Spean Bridge Primary; and small schools category - Invergarry Primary.

The event is organised by Highland Council staff from Lochaber Leisure Centre alongside PE Teachers and Highland Council’s Active Schools Co-ordinators.

Bridget Thomas, Active Schools Coordinator (Fort William) said: “A huge thanks go to all the volunteers and the helpers from Lochaber High School without whom the event could not have taken place.”
