Portree library sets summer seaside challenge for young readers

A Highland library fun competition will culminate with a trip on the high seas for some lucky youngsters this summer.

A part of the big Summer Seashore Challenge being run by Highland Council’s Community Library at Portree on the Isle of Skye, pre-School to primary seven children are being invited to take part in a special celebration of the sea.

Armed with ideas and activity packs the challenge aims to wet children’s appetite to go beach combing and rock pooling by making them more familiar with some of the most common plants and animals to be found on Skye’s seashores.

As part of the event two local businesses have also offered prizes for the youngsters who take part. A drawing and a writing competition for the under 8’s and 8-11 year olds respectively will have first prizes of  places on the Elgol-based Bella Jane boat trip to the Seals or AquaXplore and on the glass-bottomed Seaprobe Atlantis moored at Kyle.

To coincide with the youngsters’ event the Library will be displaying a large selection of books – many aimed at adults – ranging from marine biology to fishing, seafood, and gardening by the sea and even how to decorate homes in true nautical style!

More about the challenge and the competitions – which close on August 8 - can be obtained either by calling in at the Library or by telephoning 01478 614823.
