Visitors, including the First Minister of Scotland, to the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open Championship at Castle Stuart Golf Links received a warm Highland welcome last evening in Inverness after the first day’s play at the showpiece golf event.

The Bunkers’ Festival - a programme of live entertainment organised by The Highland Council’s Inverness Festivals’ team – Fèisean Inbhir Nis – got off to a lively start entertaining both visitors and locals in and around the centre of Inverness.

Irene Fraser of High Life Highland Fiddle Forte said: “Last night went very well and our performance was well received by the tourists who were very surprised to see and hear the random performances in the city centre. One visitor in particular, the First Minister Alex Salmond was very kind with his comments as he took some time out to thank our young players in Fiddle Forte.”

Pipe Major Lewis Barclay of the City of Inverness Youth Pipe Band said: “We had an excellent response in Inverness last evening. As soon as the pipes and drums started we attracted a strong level of interest and following. Folks love to see young people especially playing the Highland bagpipes and they attracted a lot of attention.”

Highland Dancers from the Elizabeth Fraser School of Dance performed in front of Inverness Castle, Elizabeth Fraser said: “There was a good turnout at the Castle with a clear mix of both golf and general holiday visitors and locals. The atmosphere was great, our dancers thoroughly enjoyed themselves and many people came up and thanked us for the performance.”

A mix of both traditional and contemporary performances will be on show at various locations or “bunkers” in the city centre tonight Friday 13 and Saturday 14 July from 7:30 to 9:30pm each evening. Taking part in the performances will be:

On each night a finale concert of all the events will also take place in front of Inverness Castle from 9:30pm – 10pm hosted by Pro Sound DJ Robert Yourson.
