Signs of the future at Ben Wyvis as Barr Construction nears completion

Barr Construction has given a group of pupils from Maryburgh and Conon Bridge primary schools the chance to make their mark on their new £8.9m school – in permanent ink.

Main contractor Barr is hammering on with work to complete the new school, which will be named Ben Wyvis. The new facility will see the existing Conon Bridge and Maryburgh rolls come together to learn under one roof.

To commemorate the merging of the two schools, eight youngsters from Maryburgh and Conon Bridge visited the site and signed their names on the final sheet of stainless steel wall cladding, which will be fitted at the front of the building, above the main entrance door.

he signatures are to face inwards and will become part of the fabric of the building forever. Barr Construction will gift a plaque to the school which will be fitted to the cladding to mark the occasion.

Pupils are due to move in to the state-of-the-art facility after the mid-term break in October following the 75-week construction project, which has seen Barr hard at work with up to 80 operatives on site at any one time.

The new school comprises 10 classrooms, nursery and wrap-around childcare facilities, a two-court sports hall with changing rooms, kitchen and dining facilities, a school library, a separate community room and kitchen and a floodlit multi-use games area.

David Mason, Project Manager for Barr Construction, said: “Creating the new Ben Wyvis primary school is Barr Construction’s first project with The Highland Council and work is progressing well.

“It’s been great to see pupils from Maryburgh and Conon Bridge schools coming together to put their mark on the new building.

“The project is on track to hand over to the council ahead of the school taking up residence in October and Barr is very proud to be providing such a modern, sustainable facility for both existing pupils and future generations.”

In anticipation of future population growth, the school has been designed with the potential for future expansion of up to three additional classrooms.
