Sutherland blue bins delivered for new service

Over the next few weeks new blue recycling wheelie bins are to be delivered to all households in Sutherland, along with details of the new refuse and recycling service. Households in parts of Sutherland which saw a four-weekly blue bin recycling service introduced in 2009 and so already have the bins, will be delivered new calendars and guides.

The start of the collections in Sutherland at the beginning of July concludes the Council’s successful introduction of the new service. From this date all households throughout The Highland Council area will receive an alternate weekly collection of refuse and recycling bins – refuse one week, recycling the following, on the same day of the week.

The Highland Council’s Waste Awareness Team will be out and about in East and Central Sutherland talking to householders about the changes to the refuse and recycling collections.

The range of materials recycled in the blue bins is different from the GREAN recycling service, with paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, food tins and drink cans only being accepted. Householders are advised that the blue recycling bins accept plastic bottles only and no other plastic items.  In addition all items should be placed loose in the recycling bins without any plastic bags.  Glass bottles and jars are not accepted in the blue bins so residents are being encouraged to take these along to their local Recycling Point.

The Highland Council’s commercial customers are also being offered recycling collections for the first time and a commitment to recycle paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, food tins and drink cans will form part of their contract. They may do this either using the blue bin collection service or, using the free permits issued with their contracts, at Recycling Points and Centres.

If anyone has not received their blue recycling bin by Friday 22nd June they should contact The Highland Council’s Waste Awareness Team on 01349 886603.
