Highland to mark Armistice Day
Highland councillors and Highland Council staff will be taking part in acts of remembrance on Sunday 11 November to mark Armistice Day throughout the Highlands.
In Caithness, Wick Members and the Ward Manager will take part in the parade which commences at 11am at the Wick War Memorial where Civic Leader for Caithness Councillor Gail Ross will lay a wreath on behalf of The Highland Council.
Meanwhile, at the same time of 11am, Thurso Members will take part in the parade at the Thurso War Memorial where Councillor John Rosie will lay a wreath.
Councillor Alex Macleod will also lay a wreath on behalf of the Council at the Halkirk War Memorial service at 10am.
In Sutherland, Councillor Jim McGillivray will be attending the memorial assembly at Dornoch War Memorial.

In Tain and Easter Ross, at Inver 1:30pm on Friday 9 November, Councillor Fiona Robertson will lay a wreath on behalf of Highland Council at a local memorial service.
On Sunday 11 November at 10:45, Councillor Alasdair Rhind will attend a service at Tain Parish Church and lay a wreath at the memorial; Councillor Jamie Stone will attend and lay a wreath at the Kilmuir War Memorial; and Councillor Fiona Robertson will lay a wreath at the Portmahomack War Memorial.
Councillor Mike Finlayson will lay a wreath at 10:45am at Evanton War Memorial. This will be followed by a service at the Church of Scotland. Councillor Carolyn Wilson will lay a wreath at Alness War Memorial at 10:45am. At Invergordon, a service at 10am at Hayes Hall will be followed by a parade to the War Memorial where Councillors Maxine Smith and Martin Rattray will lay wreaths.
Also on Sunday 18 November, a ceremony of Remembrance will be held at the Polish War Memorial in Invergordon at 2pm.
At 12:30pm on Sunday 11 November, Councillor Ian Cockburn will be laying a wreath at Garve War Memorial for the council.
On Saturday 10 November, Councillor Richard Greene will be attending the Memorial Service at Poolewe and then at 12:00 noon at the Arctic Convoys Memorial at Cove, Loch Ewe. On Sunday 11 November Councillor Greene will also attend the Remembrance Services and lay wreaths at Aultbea War Memorial at 10:45am and at Gairloch War Memorial at 12:00 noon.
In Nairn, a parade will assemble outside the Royal British Legion, march up Cawdor Street, right turn into Westbury Road, and right turn into Lodgehill Road to St Ninian’s Church where there will be a 10.45am service.
Following the service there will be a march to the Nairn War Memorial. The parade will form in Millbank Street and proceed to the War Memorial. At 12:00 noon there will be a short service and laying of wreaths by Lord Lieutenant Ewen Brodie, Provost Liz MacDonald, Royal British Legion, Armed Forces, Northern Constabulary and local organisations. The parade then proceeds to the front of the Royal British Legion where the salute will be taken by Lord Lieutenant Brodie.
Wreaths will also be laid by the Lord Lieutenant and Provost Liz MacDonald at Auldearn War Memorial at 1:15pm and at Ardclach War Memorial at 3pm.
In Lochaber, The Highland Council’s Provost Allan Henderson will lead a Remembrance Day parade in Fort William which leads off from Viewforth Car Park at 10:50am, followed by the laying of wreaths at the War Memorial. Councillor Brian Murphy will accompany the Provost. There is then a Church Service in the Duncansburgh Church. At 3pm, there will be a service at the Commando Memorial, Spean Bridge. Provost Henderson will lay wreaths at both Memorials on behalf of The Highland Council.
On the Isle of Skye, Councillors Drew Millar Councillor and Ian Renwick will represent the Council at a Remembrance parade and service on Sunday 11. The parade will commence at the Skye Gathering Hall at 10:20am and March to the War Memorial at Somerled Square for 2 minutes silence at 11am. Following this there will be a service at the Portree Church of Scotland also on Somerled Square.
At Lochalsh War Memorial, Balmacara on Sunday, Councillor Audrey Sinclair will be laying a wreath.
In Badenoch and Strathspey, wreaths will be laid at Advie War Memorial by Councillor Jaci Douglas; Aviemore War Memorial at 11am by Councillor Bill Lobban;
Grantown on Spey War Memorial at 11am by Councillor Jaci Douglas; Kingussie War Memorial at 12.30pm by Lorna MacGregor, Assistant Registrar; and at Newtonmore War Memorial at 12.00pm by John Dougherty, Principal Building Standards Surveyor.
In Inverness, Members of the Inverness Branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland and The Highland Council, staff and uniformed youth groups will parade from Huntly Street and the Town House to the Cenotaph accompanied by the Inverness British Legion Pipes and Drums, Salvation Army Band and local MP’s and MSPs.
The parade will march off from Huntly Street at 2:30pm and arrive at Cavell Gardens Cenotaph at 2:50pm.
A Service of Remembrance - conducted by Legion Padre, Reverend Alistair Murray - will take place at 3pm at the Cenotaph at Cavell Gardens in Inverness.
The Provost of Inverness, Councillor Alex Graham and Councillor Carolyn Caddick, Highland Council Armed Forces and Veterans Champion accompanied by fellow members of The Highland Council’s City of Inverness Area Committee will join the parade as it marches past on the junction of Ness Bridge and Castle Street. Provost Graham and Councillor Caddick will lay a wreath on the War Memorial at Cavell Gardens.
Schools throughout the Highlands are selling poppies and participating in Remembrance activities, involving pupils staff and local school communities.
