The Highland Council has consolidated its position as the prime authority in Scotland in promoting enhancing and moving forward the Gaelic language and culture by becoming the first authority to adopt a second generation Gaelic Language Plan (2012 – 2016).

The plan, which builds on the success of the first Gaelic Language Plan (2007 – 2011) was recently approved by Bòrd na Gàidhlig and the Scottish Government and is now a live document with statutory approval.

Councillor Hamish Fraser, Chairman of the Council’s Gaelic Implementation Group, said:  “The plan will promote Gaelic in education, the house, in communities and in the work place.

“I also hope this plan will enrich and promote our worthy Highland culture and through that promotion, that this plan will boost the economic wellbeing of the Highlands.”

The plan will be implemented by the Gaelic Implementation Group.

Councillor Fraser added:  “I trust we can continue to work in harmony and co-operation in our aspiration to make this second generation Gaelic Language Plan a success and to meet the aspirations of the National Plan for Gaelic and the Scottish Government in securing the future of our language for future generations of Highland and Island communities.”
