Removal of overnight parking signs

Following a challenge on the legal standing of “No Overnight Parking Signs” currently displayed in a number of rural laybys The Highland Council has agreed to remove these signs when local workers are in an area on other duties in order to minimise the costs involved.

The Council is following a lead taken by Transport Scotland, which is removing similar signs from the trunk road network.

Councillor Graham Phillips, Chairman of the TEC Services Committee, said: “We feel there is  little chance of winning any legal battle if we did not remove the signs.  To minimise costs, we will carry out this work when a road team is in the area on other duties.  Meanwhile, we will monitor the situation to assess the impact of removing these signs and if problems develop we will consider the options which are available to us, including formal Road Traffic Orders, to discourage overnight parking in rural laybys."
