Help support community safety for children by volunteering at this year’s Safe Highlander event

From the 8th to 18th May 2013 just under 2,000 Primary 7 pupils from schools in and around the Inverness area will be heading to the Cameron Barracks, Inverness, at different times over an eight-day period to take part in a community safety project aimed at making them Safe Highlanders.

During their day-long immersion in staying safe, the youngsters will get their chance to experience a number of potentially hazardous situations, allowing them to participate in a range of simulated practical exercises.

Volunteers and qualified First Aiders are being sought to ensure the children are escorted safely around the event, which will take place from 8th to 17th May at Cameron Barracks in Inverness. Only volunteers/first aiders with a Disclosure may apply.

The year’s partners that will be delivering sets are the Highland Council, Scottish Police Force – North Command, Scottish Fire & Rescue Service – North, Scottish Southern Energy, British Red Cross, Institute of Safety and Health, NHS Highland, Maritime Coastguard Agency, Fujitsu and Youth Action Service.

The players from Inverness Caley Thistle Inverness will be helping throughout the event and prior the kids from Smithton Youth Club are going to be packing all the Goodie Bags. This year all volunteers and First Aiders have the chance to win a Day Family Pass from Landmark Forest Adventure Park as a “thank you”.

Maggie Young, Community Safety Officer with Highland Council, said: "This is a fantastic event that teaches our children to assess safety in a practical way. It’s a fun day out where you’ll meet lots of interesting people and where your time will make a real difference. Let’s all pull together to support this award-winning partnership event."
