The Highland Council’s school litter project continued last week with volunteers from Kingussie High School getting behind the campaign.

Pupils and school staff were joined by workers from The Highland Council’s Street Cleansing and Waste Team at litter hotspots to encourage pupils to use litter bags and bins for waste and recycling throughout the week.

In return for using the bins provided, pupils were given a token that they handed in n to the school to help reach the target of over 400 tokens. Pupils handing in a token were also entered into a prize draw to win £10 cash together with some other small prizes provided locally.

As the school successfully reached their target by Thursday of the busy week they will receive £750 to spend on eco equipment or initiatives as part of the campaign.

At the end of each day the rubbish and recycling bags/bins were analysed to obtain valuable data about waste generated at school lunch breaks.  For example over 250 paper bags and 48 drinks cans were able to be recycled over the week long campaign. The statistics gathered will help the school and council plan for future recycling campaigns.

The Scope Litter Campaign, which is being funded by Zero Waste Scotland as part of a Scotland wide trial, aims to reduce the amount of lunch time litter around secondary schools and to build links between the community, businesses and schools.
