Activity Agreement helps former Inverness pupil find a love for writing.

Gemma McPhee, a former pupil of Inverness High School, has written a book in memory of her Grandmother titled "The life and Memory of Jane McPhee...".

She wrote her book as a result of experiences gained through a post-school Activity Agreement organised through The Highland Council. The book is due to be launched this week (27 June) at Eden Court Theatre.

Highland Council Activity Agreements are set up to meet individuals' needs after they leave school. An Activity Agreement is a plan of learning and activity which an advisor will help a Young Person put together, so that they can move on to further education, training or employment. It can include volunteering, short courses, supported learning and practical experience including work experience placements. The Highland Council Activity Agreements project is supported by the European Social Fund.

Speaking about her experience Gemma McPhee said: "Before I went on an Activity Agreement I was lost and confused with what to do with myself. I was struggling to cope with the death of my grandmother who was my best friend which then led to me abusing alcohol and getting further into my depression. I had no job, no confidence and felt like there was no hope.

“After bumping into Gill Smyth (Skills Development Scotland) in town I agreed to meet her in Midmills College to discuss my situation.  After taking my hobbies and skills into consideration I was then introduced to Anne Dickson (Mentor) and placed on an Activity Agreement paid for by Matthew MacIver (The Highland Council).”

She added: “Throughout the coming months I did various tasks with Anne including stage presence but as soon as she and Gill found my true passion was writing I was placed on a residential at Moniack Mhor.  I had mixed emotions about it and struggled to figure out what I wanted to do but I went and had one of the best experiences of my life. I made great friends who share a love for writing just like me.

“Every month I do a weekend (non-residential) course with various writers which is where I met John Glenday who became another mentor.  John helped me gain new skills and techniques with my writing and helped influence me into putting my memories of my granny into a book.

“Before all this, I was lost and alone. I struggled with day to day life and longed for a way out.  A job was the last thing on my mind. Thanks to Matthew, Gill, John and Anne, I now have the ability to attend job interviews and have confidence to keep trying even if I fail. This Activity Agreement has changed my life for the better and I am definitely looking forward to the book launch at Eden Court and not dwelling on the past."
