Portree pupils Show Racism the Red Card with prize winning song.

A group of pupils and staff from Portree Primary School on the Isle of Skye recently attended the Show Racism the Red Card Scottish, awards ceremony at Hampden Park, Glasgow where they won the P5-P7 school prize for their Anti-Sectarianism song.

Students and pupils from schools and colleges across Scotland came together with representatives from the world of Scottish football at Hampden Park on Thursday 21 March to stand united against racism and sectarianism.

The competition is organised by the UK’s anti-racism educational charity – ‘Show Racism the Red Card’. As part of their annual Show Racism the Red Card Creative Competition in partnership with the Scottish Qualifications Authority and the Scottish Football Association, young people were asked to come up with a creative way of getting anti-racism and anti-sectarianism messages across.

Thousands of young people across Scotland took part and the event at Hampden recognised the creative efforts of all participants.

The competition sends a clear message that young people want Scotland to be a welcoming and multi-cultural society. The prize giving is the highlight of the Scottish calendar in challenging racism and sectarianism.

The school won a cash prize of £100 and a signed Ross County Football and all pupils received goody bags. They also got a tour of the stadium and met some celebrities.

Notes to editors: words to their winning song are below (sung to the tune of “Bear Necessities”)

Show Racism the Red Card

We all need friends not enemies
We need to find the remedies
to treat each other kindly can’t you see
We all need friends not enemies
We need to find the remedies
to treat each other kindly can’t you see.

Don’t be racist, it is a crime.
If you are violent you’re wasting time
Let’s try to lend a helping hand, together make a better land
Strong together we will stand a family
It doesn’t matter who you support
Let’s just all try to enjoy the sport
Let’s try to lend a helping hand, together make a better land
Strong together we will stand a family

CHORUS
To stop racism we need more hands
Let’s kick the violence out of the stands
Let’s try to lend a helping hand, together make a better land
Strong together we will stand a family.
Don’t be racist it isn’t nice
If you are nasty, you’ll pay the price
Let’s try to lend a helping hand, together make a better land
Strong together we will stand a family.

CHORUS
Ma tha sibh suarach chaneil e snog,
Bidh daoine dhen bheachd gu bheil sibh grod
Mura h’eil sinn coltach idir,
Cha bhith e deanamh diofar
Oh thigibh comhla
Agus bidh sin sònraichte.

SÈIST

On the inside we’re all the same
Let’s work together, enjoy the game
Let’s try to lend a helping hand, together make a better land
Strong together we will stand a family.
We’re all in Scotland, let’s be a team
Let’s stop the fighting and being mean
Let’s try to lend a helping hand, together make a better land
Strong together we will stand a family.

CHORUS
