Lifeline bridge replacements completed

Work on the first of two phases of improvements, to remove a 7.5 Tonnes weight restriction on the Letters to Loggie road, near Ullapool, has been completed in record time by The Highland Council's contractor, Carillion.

In a technicaly challenging project, two bridges have been replaced in a £400,000 first phase of work and a further two will be replaced in a second phase, programmed for next year.

The bridges span deep river gorges on Lochbroom-side and the road, which they carry, is the only access to the Lochbroom community. With no diversion route available, part of the bridge replacement work has had to be carried out during a period of complete road closure.

By working round-the-clock and in close co-operation with the community and the emergency services, Carillion have been able to replace both structures in a period of only ten days.
