Public to decide as local groups put forward ideas at Stronger Sutherland event tomorrow

Community, voluntary and non-profit organisations based in Sutherland will be meeting up in Lairg tomorrow (Saturday 21 May) in hope of getting the public vote and receiving a grant of between £100 and £2000 to put their ideas into action.

The call for groups to come up with ideas on how to make their local area better has received a great response and tomorrow at the Stronger Sutherland event in Lairg Community Centre over 40 presentations will be made.

Doors will open at 10:30 for an 11am start. Each applicant will be given a 4-minute slot to highlight how their project will improve their local community. Attendees will then be asked to vote to determine which projects are funded.

Councillor Graham Phillips said: “This participatory budgeting process is an excellent way to support our local communities. Local people will be making the decision so we hope the projects will be a reflection of the priorities in the area. The event is open to everyone, so I encourage anyone who is able to come along to find out more about the great work that these groups are doing and help decide what projects are funded. The event should be an excellent opportunity to meet new people and find out what is happening locally.”

Anyone who wishes to vote must register between 10:30 and 11am at the Lairg Community Centre  and stay for the whole event. To be eligible to vote you must live in the Sutherland area and be in S3 or above.
