Queen musical rocks Inverness school

Culloden Academy’s latest production is sure to get feet tapping when pupils take to the stage for ‘We Will Rock You’ - The Musical, written by Ben Elton and featuring the songs of iconic rock band Queen.
Performances will take place at the school on the evenings of 22nd, 23rd and 24th June at 7 pm.

Science Teacher Jennifer Ross said: “Having watched some of the rehearsals, I am in awe of the talented pupils who are involved. The singing is just sensational. The performance reflects the whole school ethos that has underpinned Culloden’s successes of the past with shows such as ‘Hairspray’ and ‘His Dark Materials’.

‘We Will Rock You’ is no exception. Pupils have been involved in set and costume design, and have rehearsed in the drama and music departments for months. Choreographer Jasmin Wallace has put together memorable routines and the whole school has experiences a cross-curricular lesson on equality, one of the central themes of the show, devised by Spanish Teacher Mr McKnight.

Members of staff from every department in the school have contributed in some way.

The process began last year with a YouTube video in which teachers synched to the famous Bohemian Rhapsody in order to raise awareness and encourage pupils to sign up. It went viral in the community.

Now that show time is nearly here, pupils can’t wait to get started. “It’s lots of fun and it has so many great songs in it,” says soloist Poppy Charteris. “It’s just great!”

Senior pupil Talia Bagnall agrees: “We’ve worked really hard and it’s great music, so I think it’s something for everyone.”
