Leader calls for support to retain Fort George as military base

Today (Tuesday 19 July) Cllr Margaret Davidson, the Leader of the Highland Council convened a meeting with representatives from Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Drew Hendry and Fergus Ewing’s Office and officials across the Council, to explore what further steps could be taken to make the case for retaining Fort George as an active military base.

Speaking after the meeting, the Council Leader said: “Everyone around the table was committed to ensuring that Fort George has a future as a military barracks and, while we have already made representations to the UK Government, we will now be seeking an urgent meeting with Mark Lancaster, Under Secretary of State at the Ministry of Defence to make the case directly to the Minister.”

The Council Leader also praised the campaign by the Press and Journal to save Fort George saying “We very much support the Fight for Fort George campaign being run by the Press and Journal and would encourage people to get behind this campaign and sign the petition.”
