Refurbishment works started at Craig Maclean Leisure Centre

£2.175m works have commenced at Craig Maclean Leisure Centre to refurbish the swimming pool which is used by locals, visitors and Grantown Grammar School.

The project which was awarded to Morrison Construction (Highland) includes the remodelling of the changing village area and installing a new swimming pool ‘tank or shell’ and water treatment plant. Roof coverings to the existing pool and adjacent fitness hall will be replaced, including the installation of new roof lights over the pool.

During the works, the swimming pool area is closed to the public for a 9-month period.  The fitness suite is anticipated to close for a short period at some point during the works and customers have been notified by High Life Highland. The sport halls and adult and junior activity programme will be unaffected.

High Life cardholders will still be able to swim at Aviemore Highland resort pool during the refurbishment period.

On completion of the works the pool will be deck level which will meet the needs of swimming clubs and lessons and the pool will be more accessible with an improved disabled hoist system. The changing area will be transformed into a family friendly changing village style design which will remain suitable for school use. Two individual changing/shower rooms will be available to the public throughout the school day for the fitness suite and sports hall, and a small extension to the existing gym and a floor to ceiling viewing window from the foyer to the pool.

Local Councillor Jaci Douglas on behalf of Badenoch and Strathspey Ward Members welcomed the start of the works, she said: “I am very pleased to see the refurbishments works started at the Craig MacLean Leisure Centre on many different levels.

“As Highland Council’s representative on the NHS Highland Board I welcome the great opportunity that the investment in improved facilities at Craig MacLean Leisure Centre will provide for people to keep fit and contribute to their health and well-being.

“As a regular user of the excellent facilities at the centre along with my family, I fully appreciate the value of having and using a local swimming pool where all ages can learn to swim, improve their swimming and have fun.”
