Rangers get wild at the weekend

A weekend of nature exploration has been organised by Highland Council’s Countryside Rangers on Saturday 30th September and Sunday 1st October.

Families and individuals are invited to learn about the “Private Life of Fungi” in Cannich woods on Saturday 30th September between 2 and 3.30pm.

Mairi Nicolson, seasonal ranger for Inverness said: “It is that time of year again when mushrooms suddenly burst up into our woods.  There are so many different colours, shapes and textures around it can be very confusing.  Through the use of games and props we hope to teach people a little about the life of these fascinating micro-organisms.

“Why does a mushroom grow, what does its colour mean, why is it that shape?  The answers to these and many other questions will be answered as we explore the woods in search of these fascinating fungi.”

On Sunday 1st October from 10am-3pm, the Rangers will be exploring Glen Strathfarrar on a Wildlife Safari looking for wildlife, large and small.  Participation on this event is by booking only as numbers are restricted into the glen.

Mairi Nicolson said: “This is a beautiful 7km walk through a very scenic glen.  We will be looking in general for any of the larger mammals or birds but we have a few tricks up our sleeves to try and entice some of the glens smaller critters out of hiding.”

Both events are organised as part of The Highland Council’s Planning and Development Services countryside events programme.  They are open to family groups and individuals, and are free to attend.  Booking is required for the Wildlife safari.

The Highland Council Countryside Rangers are a partnership between The Highland Council and Scottish Natural Heritage with the aim of promoting public enjoyment and appreciation of the countryside and conserving wildlife.
