Interested in a career change to become a secondary school teacher?

Professional Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) Secondary (STEM) Partnership Induction Model Programme

We are working with the University of Dundee and the University of the Highlands and Islands to support locally based people interested in a career move gain both their Professional Graduate Diploma in Education and complete their induction year within 18 months. This partnership is a unique blend and offers a real opportunity to work with locally based people aspiring to be teachers who want to use their STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) knowledge and skills to encourage and inspire the young people in our school communities in the subject areas of maths, physics, chemistry, computing studies, home economics - which are also highly relevant to the future economic sustainability of our area. 

This new way to become a secondary teaching has now been accredited by the General Teaching Council Scotland (GTCS) and is funded by the Scottish Government with participants receiving a financial package over the 18 months of study. 

For the length of this full time programme you must live in the Highland Council geographical area as the programme structure means you will have more time based in your school, enabling you to participate more widely in the school community alongside your time undertaking academic study.

You must have:

  • A minimum of a 2.1 Honours Degree in Science (chemistry or physics), maths, computing or home economics (however, applicants with a 2.2 Honours Degree and recent and relevant work experience may also be considered)
  • The interpersonal skills, qualities and attributes to motivate and bring learning alive for young people

Enthusiasm to study and gain your full registration as a teacher while staying in the Highlands and be given a bursary to support you while studying and undertaking school placements

The programme runs from December 2018 to June 2020.

We will be holding a second Information Session at the University of Highlands and Islands, Inverness College, 1 Inverness Campus, Inverness IV2 5NA on Tuesday 14 August 2018 from 5.30-7 pm.

Gaining some school experience

Before applying to the programme we would recommend that you gain greater appreciation of and insight into the role, responsibilities, rewards and challenges of being a secondary teacher.  Make links with a local secondary school and try to arrange to spend some time there.  For ideas of specific things we would recommend you try to do during time in a school please email - roseanne.fitzpatrick@highland.gov.uk
