Birth, death and marriage certificates
How to get a copy certificate
You can get a new certificate (extract) for any birth, death, marriage or civil partnerships registered in Scotland since 1855.
If the certificate is for an event which took place in the last 12 months and was not in Highland, please contact us first to make sure the certificate is available.
You can also order a certificate by either:
- Visiting a registration office
- Printing and posting our application form
If the event was registered less than one month ago it costs £10.
After one month of registration there is an extra £5 cost for a search. However, if you can show the registrar an abbreviated or full certificate (not a photocopy) of that entry, it will only cost £10.
If you want to just look at any record, you may visit any registration office and pay £5 for this.
If you would like a certificate posted to you, there is charge for this service - £1 for UK, £2 for outwith UK . If you are sending your request by post you can instead include a stamped, self-addressed envelope.
If you are adopted
If you were legally adopted in Scotland, extracts are provided by National Records of Scotland.
How to pay
The preferred method of payment is credit or debit card, but in some circumstances cash or cheques will be accepted. If you are ordering by post, please send a cheque or postal order, made payable to Highland Council.
