How to get a copy certificate

You can get a new certificate (extract) for any birth, death, marriage or civil partnerships registered in Scotland since 1855.

If the certificate is for an event which took place in the last 12 months and was not in the Highlands, contact us first to make sure the certificate is available.

If you are adopted

If you were legally adopted in Scotland, extracts are provided by National Records of Scotland.

Charges

If the event was registered less than one month ago - £10.

If the event was registered more than one month ago - £15 (includes search fee).

If you want to just look at any record, you may visit any registration office - £5.

If you would like a certificate posted to you, there is charge for this service - £2 for UK, £4 for outwith UK. If you are sending your request by post you can instead include a stamped, self-addressed envelope.

We aim to process and post your certificate within 10 days

If you require your certificate urgently you can order Express Priority for an additional £10.00 charge.

Express Priority

Items can be posted to you first class, or collected from the Inverness Registration Office, on the same or next working day.

Orders before 12:00 can either be collected after 3pm, or posted to you first class on that day.

Orders after 12:00 can either be collected, or posted to you first class the next day.

Orders can only be collected or posted to you on working days.

A member of staff will contact you to confirm a collection time.

How to pay

The preferred method of payment is credit or debit card, but in some circumstances cash or cheques will be accepted. If you are ordering by post, please send a cheque or postal order, made payable to Highland Council.
