Home Office proposals to accommodate asylum seekers at Cameron Barracks, Inverness

The Home Office officially notified us on 27 October 2025 of its intention to accommodate up to 300 adult male asylum seekers at Cameron Barracks in Inverness.

The Home Office is responsible for the policy and operational management of the asylum system and asylum accommodation, as well as the safety and wellbeing of people in asylum dispersal properties.

Participation in asylum dispersal is mandatory for all local authorities in the UK.

A multi-agency partnership involving the Council, NHS Highland, Police Scotland, the Scottish Government, COSLA, Third Sector Interface, and Home Office officials is meeting weekly to plan for the project. Home Office officials have now indicated that arrivals will not take place until January 2026.

We are united with our partners in our commitment to welcoming people fleeing persecution and seeking safety. We will work with the Home Office to support the needs of both the asylum seekers and the local community. We ask people to continue to show tolerance, compassion, and humanity. You can view a factsheet on Cameron Barracks on the Home Office's website for more information.
