From Wednesday (22 January) until the end of March The Highland Council’s Gaelic Community Learning Development staff will be running a series of informal workshops across the Highlands for parents of children in Gaelic-medium education.

The main aim of the workshops is to encourage parents to play a greater role in supporting their children’s Gaelic-medium education by nurturing and encouraging the use of Gaelic in the home.

The workshops will comprise of a two hour session entitled ‘Supporting Gaelic Speaking Children – Things to Do’. There will also be an opportunity to view at the workstations the many high quality resources, including books and CDs, websites such as Gaelic4 Parents, online BBC Alba games and general information on other cultural activities and events that their children can attend.

The Workshop Leaders will show how the resources can be used by parents in the home to support their children’s Gaelic education.

Although dates for all the sessions are waiting to be confirmed, the session on Wednesday will take place in Inverness and the aim is to run one workshop in each area where Gaelic medium provision is currently being provided, and at least two workshops in places such as Portree and Inverness where more young people are being educated through the medium of Gaelic.

Councillor Hamish Fraser, Chairman of the Council’s Gaelic Implementation Group said: “The Workshops will be very informative for parents of children in Gaelic Education and I hope that parents take the opportunity to attend the workshops in their area.

“It is important that there is a supportive environment for their children in relation to Gaelic in the home, especially by creating a positive attitude to Gaelic and a Gaelic presence in home-life.”
