Street naming and numbering, and property addresses
Numbering of new properties
Property numbering plays a crucial role in defining an address. It assigns a unique number to each building or property on a street, making it easier for people to locate and identify specific addresses. The numbering of properties in new and existing streets is carried out by the Corporate Address Gazetteer Team (CAG).
There are several specific addressing elements that constitute a well-formed address:
- House Number or Name
- Street Name
- Town
- Postcode
When numbering properties we follow these guidelines:
- refer to the street from which access to a property is taken.
- assign even numbers on one side of the street and odd numbers on the other. Wherever possible, the numbers increase as we move away (on both sides) from the starting point of the street.
- in a cul-de-sac, we prefer to number the properties consecutively in a clockwise direction.
- never omit numbers in a sequence (for example. number 13 will always be included)
Our charge for numbering of new properties depends on the number of properties being registered, as indicated on our sliding scale. Prior to filling out our online form, take a moment to review our service charges. These are reviewed annually with any fee increase taking effect from 1 April each year.
All addresses are created in accordance with the national standard for addressing, BS7666:2006 and the Scottish Gazetteer Conventions.
