Altnaharra Primary School

Review of proposal to discontinue provision of education

We have published our Final Consultation Report into our proposal to discontinue the provision of education at Altnaharra Primary School.

The original consultation on the proposal ran from 27 August to 26 October 2018.

The Final Consultation Report is to be submitted to the Care, Learning and Housing Committee (CLH) Committee on 29 May 2019.

The Director of Care and Learning has reviewed:

- all of the submissions;

- the note of the meeting;

- and the Education Scotland report;

- and has had special regard to:

- alternatives to closure;

- the community impact;

- and the impact of travelling arrangements.

After carrying out the above review, the Director has concluded the proposal to close Altnaharra Primary School offers educational benefits and should be implemented.  She will recommend this to the Committee.

Final Paper and Appendices

Between now and 15 May 2019, members of the public are invited to provide comments which will be tabled at the March meeting of the CLH Committee. This will allow Elected Members to take into account any further representations in relation to the recommendation contained within the Consultation Report before agreeing a decision.

Proposal to replace Tain Royal Academy, Craighill Primary, Knockbreck Primary and St. Duthus with a new 3-18 campus 

We have been seeking the views of local communities on a proposal to replace the following schools, Tain Royal Academy, Craighill Primary School, Knockbreck Primary School and St. Duthus Special School, with a new 3-18 campus on one of two possible sites, either the Tain Royal Academy site or the Craighill Primary site. The views of parents, the local community and others were sought over a period extending from 5 June 2018 to 4 September 2018. A public meeting was held on 18 June 2018 at Tain Royal Academy Community Campus.

Gaelic Medium Catchment Area for Ullapool Primary School

We have published the Final Consultation Report into our proposal to establish a Gaelic Medium catchment area for Ullapool Primary School.

The public consultation ran from 29 October 2018 to 10 December 2018.

The Final Consultation Report is to be submitted to the Highland Council’s Care, Learning and Housing Committee on 29 May 2019.

The Director of Care and Learning has reviewed:

- all of the submissions;

- the note of the meeting;

- and the Education Scotland report;

After carrying out the above review, the Director has concluded the proposal offers educational benefits and should be implemented. She will recommend this to the Committee.

We have been seeking the views of local communities on a proposal to establish a Gaelic Medium catchment area for Mallaig Primary School. The views of parents, school pupils, the local community and others were sought over a period extending from 4 February 2019 to 22 March 2019. A public meeting was held in Mallaig Primary School on 20 February 2019.
