Grass cutting in open spaces
We maintain over 10 million square metres of grass within the Highland Council area.
We will soon have a map available where you can check if a particular grassy area is one that the Highland Council maintains.
Cutting frequency
How often we cut grass depends on how often it is used (amenity).
High amenity
Grass cut frequently, approximately every 1 to 2 weeks.
Includes areas like:
- sport fields
- cemeteries
- some parks.
General amenity
Grass is maintained but not strictly, cut approximately every 2 to 4 weeks. This will encompass most areas maintained by the Council, such as housing estates, some parks, grassy areas in towns, etc.
Low amenity
Areas where grass is less maintained, typically cut once or twice per season (March to October). Includes areas such as verges, roundabouts, difficult to reach places (such as river banks), and areas designated for rewilding.
