Dispose of home asbestos

Asbestos in older buildings

Asbestos was widely used in building materials because it resists heat, fire and chemicals.

When disturbed, asbestos releases fibres that can cause serious lung diseases, including cancer.

Asbestos was banned in the UK in 1999, but it can still be found in older homes. Because of these health risks, asbestos must be disposed of safely.

Checking for asbestos in your home

Homes built before 1990 may contain asbestos. It was often used:

  • in insulation boards
  • in lagging on pipes
  • inside storage heaters
  • in corrugated roofing

Remember: If in doubt, ask for advice
