The Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006 says that anyone responsible for an animal must meet its welfare needs. This includes:
- mammals
- birds
- reptiles
- amphibians
- fish
You must make sure your animals:
- have enough food and water
- live in a suitable environment
- are protected from pain, injury and disease
If you are concerned that an animal's welfare needs are not being met, you can report it to us.

What powers we have
Our Animal Health and Welfare Officers can take action to stop animals from suffering. These powers are also given to people appointed by the Scottish Government.
