Change your name

How to change your name

If your birth or adoption was registered in Scotland, you can apply to change your first name or surname.

Your new name will be recorded on your birth or adoption certificate. The certificate will show both your new name and your previous name.

If the person is under 16, special rules apply. Contact us for advice.

You do not need to use the Change of Name process if you are changing your name after getting married, forming a civil partnership, or getting divorced.

You need to complete a form, depending on the age of the person changing their name:

  • under 12 months old
  • under 16 years old
  • 16 years or older

You can find the forms and more information on the National Records of Scotland website.

Costs

The cost will be:

  • £40 for one person
  • £10 for each extra family member (if applying at the same time)
  • £15 for a full birth certificate with the new name
