Spending your Self-Directed Support budget

Capped spending

There is a limit to how much can be spent in certain cases. Examples include:

  • family holidays or short breaks. If support from a Personal Assistant or specialist equipment is needed, these costs can be included. Where a young person is going on a holiday or short break without their family, and this is part of the agreed Child’s Support Plan, the full cost may be covered. However, opportunities for charity contributions should be explored first
  • activities can be included in the plan, but for funding to be approved, they must fall outside what would typically be considered a parental responsibility
  • one off purchases can be agreed as part of the plan, but ideally should not be fully funded from the budget. If the item is not specialist or disability-specific, and funding is considered exceptional to meet a particular need or outcome, a parental contribution should be discussed. Charity options should also be considered before using budgeted funds
