Policy details
The Corran Ferry live traffic cameras provide real-time views of ferry queues to help travellers plan their journeys. These cameras show fixed views of the marshalling areas and approach roads, which are all public spaces.
Purpose
These cameras were introduced in 2023 as an additional contingency measure to support journey planning. They help users see queue lengths during busy periods, special events, or service disruptions.
Community engagement
Local consultation is carried out through the Corran Ferry Stakeholders Group, ensuring the community remains informed and involved in the operation of the live traffic cameras.
Important notes
The live traffic cameras:
- live stream only – images are not recorded
- are low-resolution – buffering may occur due to internet speeds
- permanently black out areas near private land (these are called privacy zones)
- are not CCTV or surveillance cameras
- do not store images or allow identification of individuals or vehicle number plates
- views are fixed and do not rotate
Legislation and compliance
The operation of these cameras complies with the following legislation and codes of practice:
- Human Rights Act 1998
- Data Protection Act 1998
- Information Commissioner’s CCTV Code of Practice
- Regulation of Investigatory Powers (Scotland) Act 2000
- Highland Council’s Code of Practice for Public Space CCTV
While we operate CCTV systems in partnership with Police Scotland across the Highlands, the Corran Ferry cameras are not part of the CCTV network.
