In line with the Climate Change Act 2019, which calls for reduced emissions and low-carbon infrastructure, electric propulsion has been identified as the preferred solution for short ferry crossings.
We are proud to be part of the Small Vessels Replacement Programme (SVRP) led by Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited (CMAL). This initiative will introduce a fleet of standardised, state-of-the-art electric ferries serving routes along Scotland’s West Coast.
Through this collaboration, we will take on a management role in the project while benefiting from CMAL’s deep expertise in vessel procurement, technical design, site supervision, and economies of scale. This partnership also ensures consistency across the Caledonian Ferries (CHFS) network.
The design for the new Roll-on Roll-off electric ferry is now complete, and the tender specification is ready to be issued to shipbuilders. Delivery is expected by late 2028 or early 2029, aligning with the rollout of supporting infrastructure and charging facilities in 2027 and 2028.
Powered by electric propulsion, the new vessel will significantly reduce CO₂ emissions—supporting the Scottish Government’s commitment to decarbonise the ferry network and achieve Net Zero by 2045.
