City of Inverness Area Committee

What the committee does

The City of Inverness area committee is responsible for local decision-making and service oversight in the Inverness area.

Its remit includes:

  • appointing the Provost, Depute Provosts and Leader of Inverness and Area, who are responsible for running the committee and managing its functions (the Provost and Depute Provosts carry out civic duties only)
  • working with partners to promote the city and area, support future prosperity, and facilitate inward investment, regeneration and economic development, including delivering the Inverness City Vision
  • developing connections with, and ensuring council support for, the local Community Partnership
  • implementing the council’s approach to localism and place planning in the city and area
  • scrutinising and monitoring the local delivery of council services, within approved resources and strategy
  • scrutinising the performance of, and engaging with, Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service
  • monitoring the delivery of capital projects in the city and area, as agreed in the council’s capital programme
  • approving delegated local functions, such as road traffic orders, road construction consents and upholding access rights under the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003
  • championing local initiatives that promote and support the traditional languages, heritage and culture of the Highlands
  • making nominations or appointments to local outside bodies not covered by the council or strategic committees, such as local access forums (only where multiple nominations or appointments are required)
  • agreeing methods and approaches for community engagement and participation in relation to city and area business
  • ensuring all decisions comply with relevant legislation, the council’s Scheme of Delegation to Committees and Officers, and the council’s Financial Regulations
  • considering and promoting local initiatives that advance equality under the Equality Act and tackle socio-economic disadvantage
