What the committee does

The Lochaber Committee is responsible for local decision-making and service oversight in the Lochaber area.

Its remit includes:

  • appointing the chair of the local committee, who is responsible for running the committee and managing its functions. A civic leader may also be appointed where appropriate
  • developing connections with, and ensuring council support for, the local community planning partnership
  • implementing the council’s localism action plan as it relates to the locality
  • scrutinising and monitoring the local delivery of council services, within approved resources and strategy
  • scrutinising the performance of, and engaging with, Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service
  • monitoring the delivery of council capital projects in the local area, as agreed in the council’s capital programme
  • approving delegated local functions, such as road traffic orders, road construction consents and upholding access rights
  • championing local initiatives that promote and support the traditional languages, heritage and culture of the Highlands
  • making nominations or appointments to local outside bodies not covered by the council or strategic committees, such as local access forums
  • agreeing local community engagement, including ward forums related to council business in the locality
  • considering proposals for community participation and the transfer of functions to community management or ownership, in line with council policies and guidance from the Communities and Partnerships Committee
  • ensuring all local decisions comply with relevant legislation and the council’s approved Scheme of Delegation to Committees and Officers
