Under the Gambling Act 2005, a Small Society Lottery is a lottery run by a non-commercial society for charitable, sporting, cultural, or other non-private gain purposes. Such lotteries must be registered with the local authority where the society's principal office is located.
Key requirements include:
- ticket sales must not exceed £20,000 per lottery or £250,000 per calendar year
- at least 20% of proceeds must benefit the society's objectives
- no individual prize may exceed £25,000
- a registration fee of £40 and annual renewal fee of £20 apply
- a statutory return must be submitted to the licensing authority within three months of the draw
