The West Highland Museum (WHM) project proposals include renovating and expanding the museum into adjacent land and premises already owned. The project will create a modern fit-for-purpose visitor attraction and valuable historic and cultural resource allowing:
- improved display of artefacts currently in storage
- more opportunities for education, exhibition, and research
- expanded retail offering
- better efficiency and accessibility
- improved facility for local communities and visitors. Current project costs are estimated at £6M
The WHMT have just received permission (June 2026) to start their Development Stage application by the National Lottery Heritage Fund with a grant of £263,163 to support the next phase. A formal announcement was made at an event in the Highland Cinema on Thursday 4 June 2026.
The Trust is also set to progress the demolition of a large old building in the museums garden ground. Having recently been granted planning consent, architects have been given the go-ahead to initiate the next stage which will see the building made safe and as much material as possible saved for re-use.
