NHS Highlands planning application for the development of a new hospital in Fort William was approved by the Highland Council on the 19th June 2026 following several years design work and site investigations. The outline business case for the £137m replacement for Fort William's 60-year-old Belford Hospital has also been submitted by NHS Highland and is now with the Scottish Government for consideration.
The new hospital will be built at Blar Mhor, incorporating increased clinical floor space (12,400 sq. metres), a modern Accident and Emergency (A&E) department, surgical operating theatres, a maternity ward, radiology, and a renal unit. Pending final Scottish Government business case approval, construction is targeted to begin in October 2027 with an estimated operational date towards the end of 2030.
The new hospital is part of a wider NHS Redesign of Health and Social Care looking at broader service change throughout Lochaber.
