UK government levelling up fund

Inverness has been awarded £19.9 million from the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund to support cultural, environmental, and economic regeneration.

About the Levelling Up Fund

The UK Government Levelling Up Fund is a £4.8 billion programme that invests in infrastructure to improve everyday life across the UK. It supports:

  • town centre and high street regeneration
  • local transport upgrades
  • investment in cultural and heritage assets

Inverness Zero Carbon Cultural Regeneration Project

Under this banner, three major projects were brought together to support the environmental, cultural, and economic regeneration of Inverness. All three will use low-carbon heating systems to help meet net zero targets.

Total funding awarded: £19.9 million

Castle Street Energy Centre – £4.4 million

A new Energy Centre will be developed on Castle Street to provide heat and energy to:

  • Inverness Castle – currently being transformed into a world-class visitor attraction
  • Inverness Town House

This project supports the Inverness and Highland City Region Deal, a £315 million partnership between the UK and Scottish Governments, The Highland Council, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, and the University of the Highlands and Islands.

Northern Meeting Park Refurbishment – £5.9 million

Opened in 1864, Northern Meeting Park is one of the oldest Highland games venues in the world. The funding will support:

  • refurbishment and preservation of the Victorian grandstand
  • improved access to green space in the city centre
  • enhanced sporting and cultural facilities
  • a new community pavilion
  • upgraded infrastructure for local and major events
  • a new low-carbon heating source

Bught Park Improvements – £9.6 million

Bught Park is Inverness’s major green space, supporting sports and large-scale events. The improvements will include:

  • new changing facilities
  • enhanced spectator and hospitality infrastructure
  • a new sports pavilion
  • a dedicated shinty experience celebrating the sport’s Highland heritage
  • a new low-carbon heating source
