Local government elections

The Highland Council election

The next Scottish Local Government Election will take place on Thursday 6 May 2027

Local government elections are held to elect councillors to Scotland’s 32 local authorities. Each council area is divided into electoral wards. Voters elect councillors to represent their ward.

The Highland Council area has 21 wards.

By-elections

A by-election may be held if a councillor’s seat becomes vacant, for example, due to resignation or death.

By-elections can take place at any time during the council term. However, if a vacancy occurs within 6 months of a scheduled election, a by-election will not be held.
