Community winter resilience

Guidance

We recognise that local communities can play a vital role in keeping footpaths safe during winter. While we operate a fleet of over 40 footpath gritting tractors, it is not possible to treat every path promptly, which is why we offer support to communities who wish to take action in their own areas.

What we ask from communities

To help us coordinate effectively, we ask communities to:

  • nominate a liaison person to work with Highland Council and manage requests
  • compile a list of volunteers willing to help
  • identify footpaths to be treated and suitable salt storage locations
  • estimate the number of snow shovels and pushers needed
  • arrange safe storage for equipment (this may be at volunteers’ homes)
  • ensure volunteers provide their own warm clothing, suitable footwear, transport, and refreshments

To ensure timely delivery of equipment and salt, make arrangements before bad weather begins or during breaks between weather events. Requests made during active snowfall may be delayed due to staff being deployed.
