Pre-packed foods labelling advice

The labelling of foods is set out by Regulation (EC) No.1169/2011 and is enforced in Scotland by The Food Information (Scotland) Regulations 2014 (as amended).

Information provided here is intended as a very basic guide for the labelling of pre-packed foods.

The following information must be displayed on the label of pre-packed food:

  • name of food
  • ingredients list
    • the quantity of certain ingredients
  • allergen identification
  • weight
  • durability indication
  • storage conditions and conditions of use
  • name and address of food business
  • country of origin or place of provenance of a food (if required)
  • alcoholic strength (if required)
  • nutritional information (unless exempt)

In addition to this information, there are exemptions to the above, and there are certain layout principles that should be adhered to.
